Born on a rainy day in Seattle in the middle of the last century, Philip acquired his first camera at the age of twelve. The first lesson he learned was that the camera doesn't record one's perceptions, but neither does it record physical reality and certainly not one's thoughts or feelings.
At the age of fourteen after his first photography course, he made an enlarger out of an old Kodak No. 1 bellows camera and assembled his first darkroom. The results were mixed and he learned about vignetting.
Photo classes in college expanded his knowledge of the basic concepts and process. Over time he began to understand what Ansel Adams and the other masters were doing to optimize the capabilities and limitations of the process. Kodak's very early advertizing slogan "you push the button, we do the rest" turned out to be misleading.
After a career in aerospace which included doing studio photography for a major company for the last 10 years, he has retired and continues to pursue his love of photography.
The original problem remains: How to make this technology communicate one's experiences and thoughts and feelings to others?
